With Gawker losing the case against Hulk Hogan (and being pretty dumb about the whole situation) what does this mean for Gawker media and its affiliates?
Specifically, I mean Jalopnik because it’s the only site I care about that’s owned by Gawker. I used to care about Kotaku, but they’ve been going down the tubes for a while now.
Will Jalopnik stand on its own? I think it could what with it enjoyed millions of unique clicks a month (I think I saw that somewhere). Or will it be cut up and merged with other sites?
This was probably already posted on here a while ago, but I didn’t see anything about it and I’d like to talk about it.

Nothing, probably. They’ll appeal and the judgement will get whacked down to a more reasonable amount. Florida is known to get pretty crazy with its money awards... There’s no chance they will end up paying the full $140 million.
I’m sure gossip rags have funds to pay for things like this, and Gawker won’t be an exception. They’ve got money in the bank to pay for this stuff.

Gawker will win on appeal. And if they don’t, the Mods will ban everyone and just post noodz until the site shutters.

My guess is that either 1) all of GM gets purchased by an conglomerate. See also: Engadget’s sites and AOL (hey, remember autoblog? That was a thing, right?). Or 2) The sites get parted out.
I think 1 is most likely, but 2 would be best. There’s a fair amount of value in established blogs like Jalopnik, Deadspin, even Jezebel (Gawker, however, is totally fucked).

Only for Brown, Bronze and Silver tiers. Gold and Black will remain the same. Brefass allotments will probably drop a bit.

I can see them getting the damages reduced, but I don’t see an appeal overturning the verdict.

If they go bankrupt and have to liquidate Jalopnik will just be sold off to someone. It has value. Depending on who buys it could be anywhere from no-change to solely the name sticking around but being otherwise unrecognizable. More likely, though, the judgment will be reduced and things will just keep turning.

As a lawyer, I tend to agree with you - if they don’t win on appeal, they’ll get the judgment drastically reduced, and that will be appealed to the highest level. We’ve got a long way to go.

Gawker will mos def win on appeal. Among other things, they have proof that Hogan lied on the stand. He committed purgery while under oath. His lies undo his entire case. I’ll try to find a link to a particular article that details a bunch of stuff like the purgery. Hell, Gawker might be able to sue Hogan for their legal fees. Maybe.

I don’t have access to the membership database right now (Thanks, Kinja!) but if you’re Gold or above, your Brefass allotment will be lowered , not cut off. Brown, Bronze and Silver will see their membership dues increased slightly to cover the added costs.

I know Hogan lied on the stand, but I still hope for the hellhole of Gawker to cease to exist. Between Hogan and the Conde Nast outing, Gawker is nothing more than the bottom feeder of the media.

I figure Nick Denton would use his personal funds to buy the best assets of Gawker out of bankruptcy and restart the company under a new name. Either that, or some online media company steps in and cherry picks assets themselves.

But it doesn’t have to be, whatever happened to true and honest journalism? Are we so lazy that instead of chasing real and important shit, we’re going to out someone, expose private lives, and/or try to ruin someone’s life, etc...all with a pretty clickbait title on top? Out of all of Gawker’s blogs, only Jalopnik (Oppo included) and the sports blogs tend to stay away from Gawker’s absurd formatting.
I pay for the stuff I love with hard work, not laziness coupled to stooping as low as a celebrity tabloid. :)

Maybe i’m just jaded as i lost two and half music journalism jobs when the economy tanked.
Gawker has to pay the bills, so the trash pays for Jalop and Oppo. In a perfect world, they would all be independently self-sustaining.
Oh well.
